Privacy Policy for markup

Effective Date: August 1, 2025
Last Updated: May 28, 2026

1. Introduction

Progressive Works, Inc. (“we,” “our,” or “us”) operates the markup application and this website (collectively, the “Service”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you:

  • Use the markup application on supported mobile and desktop platforms
  • Visit this website (markup.progressiveworks.co)

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Personal Information

Since our application does not require account creation, we collect minimal personal information:

  • Purchase and subscription status needed to provide premium features
  • Feedback information you choose to send by email
  • User preferences and settings, which are stored locally on your device

2.2 Subscription and Purchase Data

To manage premium feature access without requiring markup accounts, we use app store purchase systems and Adapty:

  • Purchase status, entitlement state, product identifiers, and app store transaction information needed to unlock or restore premium features
  • SDK identifiers used by Adapty to manage subscription status
  • This information is used solely for purchase verification, subscription management, fraud prevention, and customer support
  • The application disables Adapty IP address collection where supported by the SDK configuration

2.3 Usage and Analytics Data

For the Application:

  • First-party anonymous rendering analytics: If you explicitly enable usage analytics, the app may send anonymous rendering statistics to stats-markup.progressiveworks.co
  • Rendering analytics can include Markdown block types and counts, heading levels, code language categories, callout categories, locked feature counts, unsupported feature counts, issue counts, platform, app version, build version, locale, and subscription plan
  • Rendering analytics does not include Markdown file contents, file names, personal information, raw LaTeX source, raw Mermaid definitions, or raw PlantUML definitions
  • Usage analytics is off by default until you choose to enable it, and can be disabled in settings
  • When offline or delivery fails, enabled analytics events may be queued locally for up to 7 days before delivery or deletion

For This Website:

  • PostHog Analytics: Collects anonymized website usage and visitor behavior
  • Browser information and IP address
  • Page views and interaction data

Important Distinctions:

  • The application and website analytics systems are separate
  • Website tracking can be blocked by browser extensions or privacy settings
  • Application usage analytics is controlled by the in-app setting and is not enabled unless you choose to enable it

2.4 Markdown Content Data

Important Privacy Commitment:

  • Your Markdown documents are processed locally within the application
  • Markdown content is used exclusively for preview rendering and PDF export functionality
  • We do not transmit your Markdown content, LaTeX source, Mermaid definitions, or PlantUML definitions to external rendering servers or third parties
  • Your content remains private and under your control at all times
  • PDF generation occurs entirely on your device without transmitting content to external servers
  • Support for LaTeX equations, Mermaid diagrams, and supported PlantUML diagrams is processed locally
  • The application does not rely on an external PlantUML rendering server, and PlantUML network includes are not part of the app rendering path
  • Syntax highlighting for 15+ programming languages is rendered on your device
  • Custom themes, font preferences (9 body fonts and 7 code fonts for Premium users), and application settings are stored locally on your device
  • This local-first design helps markup work in privacy-sensitive and restricted-network environments where external rendering services may be unavailable

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information for the following purposes:

3.1 Service Provision

  • Provide and maintain the markup application
  • Process your Markdown documents locally for preview and PDF export
  • Verify and manage premium feature access through app store and Adapty subscription systems
  • Deliver premium features to users who have purchased them

  • Display pricing and purchase options provided by app store and paywall systems

3.2 Analytics and Improvement

  • Analyze opt-in anonymous rendering statistics to improve Markdown support and rendering quality
  • Analyze website usage through PostHog analytics to improve this website
  • Develop new features and functionality based on user behavior insights

  • Website Analytics: Retained for up to 2 years through PostHog for website improvement
  • Payment Data: Retained as required by app stores, payment providers, and applicable law

  • Control website local storage through browser settings
  • Reset application to default state as needed

7.2 Analytics Opt-out

For the Application:

  • Usage analytics is off unless you enable it in the app

  • You can reset analytics consent in the app settings to show the consent dialog again

  • Enable “Do Not Track” in your browser settings
  • Use privacy-focused browsers (e.g., Brave, Firefox with Enhanced Tracking Protection)

8. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

Website Only: This website uses cookies and similar technologies to:

  • Analyze visitor behavior through PostHog

You can control cookie settings through your browser preferences. Note that blocking cookies may affect website functionality.

Application: The application does not use cookies. Premium feature verification uses app store and Adapty subscription technology, not browser cookies. Optional usage analytics uses app-local storage for queued delivery state.
